Housing a number of ruins from a prehistoric Indian civilization, the Chaco Culture National Historical Park has historic sites and modern historical exhibits to help visitors understand the significance of this culture and these remains. Start with a trip to the visitors center, where displays and pamphlets give information about the various sites within the park, including the five large Chacoan ruins located along the nine-mile driving loop. Each of these, occupied between 850 and 1250 CE, has short walking paths for further exploration without too much physical strain. Backcountry hiking trails lead to some of the more remote ruins; permits are necessary but can be picked up for free at the visitors center. The park, situated in northwestern New Mexico, is far from all large towns but offers great sights for those who make the journey.
Open daily sunrise - sunset.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicle $8; Individual $4.
